Getting a new kitten is an exciting time. You may have had a kitten for a while or you may not even know that a kitten was about to join your household. But whatever the circumstances of your arrival, the first month with your new kitten is a month of change, and you can do some things to make these changes go smoothly.
If you intend to bring a new kitten home, take the time to prepare for the arrival. Buy items your kitten will need and place them in your home so that other people and pets can adapt to them. Pheromones can be broadcast before the arrival of the new kitten to help your older cats and the new one to feel calm and relaxed. Even if you already have a cat, make sure that the new kitten will have its own bed, plates of food and water and some toys. Prepare a bathroom or other small room with these objects so that your kitten can stay there the first nights in his new home.
You should have at least one litter box more than your cats and there should be no direct view between the litter box and the litter box. Additional bedding and, of course, kitten food will also be needed to help your kitten feel at home.
The first day with your new kitten is very exciting, but you'll want to be careful not to overwhelm him. Let the kitten explore the small room you have already set up or, if you do not have time to prepare for his arrival, install a safe and sit on the floor while the kitten gets used to it.
If you have other pets, allow them to sniff the kitten while you hold it, but make sure you keep it secure at all times. Place the kitten in the small room with his belongings when you can not watch him. So you will not have to worry about injuries.
Make sure the kitten knows where the litter boxes are and that he eats and drinks. If the kitten wants to sleep, let him sleep. Keep the carrier in which you brought him home, in case the kitten is nervous and wants to curl up inside.
After a few days, your kitten will explore his new home and get used to the location of the litter box, food and dishes containing water. He could even claim a favorite place to sleep and befriend your pets.
Make sure your kitten continues to eat and drink and monitor his litter habits during this time. If you see parasites, blood, loose stools, etc. in the litter box, we advise you to bring this sample to the veterinarian. Regardless of this, you will need to make an appointment during this time to have your kitten checked.
30 days
At the end of the first month, your kitten should eat, drink and use the litter box normally. Your cat should already be adapted to his new home, so that scraped surfaces, wrestling, climbing, etc. will probably be observed. If your kitten begins to show less than favorable behavior, be sure to smother him in the egg as soon as possible. Provide your kitten with proper scratching surfaces, objects to climb and toys to play. Use treats and catnip to draw them to areas where you want to play.
Do not panic if you have another cat and he does not get along with the new kitten for now. This process can be time consuming and 30 days may not be enough for your cat to adjust.
